The infamous hate group Westboro Baptist Church showed up to protest at Texas A&M University in College Station, but were met with protests and picket signs from a large group of Aggie students, who stole the day from the hate mongers.
Members of Westboro showed up on campus in College Station, Texas, early Monday morning to protest what the A&M students have been taught in their classes. Steve Drain, one of the Westboro cult members, said in a statement that “Their [A&M Students] moral compasses have been broken by their parents, their teachers and their preachers.
“From the time they were born, they were taught lies such as God loves everybody,” he continued, “and it’s okay to be gay, and it’s okay to divorce your wife and remarry another one.”
However, on this day, the members of the Westboro cult were met with protests from the A&M students, as many showed up with signs reading “God Hates No One,” and “All You Need Is Love.” Not far away from the Westboro protest, Aggie students assembled for an impromptu yell practice to combat the hate spewing from the cult. Elyssa De Caprio, the practice organizer, said the yell practice was meant to both distract from the Westboro protests as well as celebrate the birthday of the United States Marine Corps.
A&M student Pierce Robson said of the Westboro Baptist Church, “This is literally a platform for them to spew this kind of incendiary, cherry-picked hate speech that is taken completely out of context.”
The Westboro Baptist Church is easily one of the most hated and insane groups in America, regularly attending the funerals of fallen soldiers, claiming that the deaths of these soldiers is God’s way of punishing the country for accepting the gay lifestyle. After they were met with A&M counter protests, Westboro Baptist Church left and headed to Houston to protest Mayor Anise Parker’s subpoena of church records in the city.
