Twitter

Two of the most significant trends that Twitter has experienced over the last two years has been the rise of interest in crypto and a rise of interest in NSFW content.

The rise in crypto on Twitter

The rising popularity of cryptocurrencies over the past few years has spilled over onto Twitter, a platform that a lot of cryptocurrencies use to establish themselves, and a lot of holders of crypto talk with one another.

This is hardly a surprising trend, especially when one considers that the value of the crypto industry has exploded in the last few years – during the last bull market, the market capitalisation of the entire industry grew by more than 10x in just a couple of years.

Twitter has become the de facto public forum for NFT projects and DeFi projects to gain traction, and this trend shows no sign of abating.

The rise in NSFW content

All social media platforms have to contend with the fact that many people wish to use their platforms to post NSFW content.

For this reason, social media platforms often have a range of terms and conditions that their users must comply with if they wish to use the platform.

Facebook’s rules are fairly stringent, but Twitter has been easing their regulations as of late, so as not to lose market share to some of their newer competitors.

This has meant that a variety of explicit accounts have been granted permission to continue to use Twitter, albeit such posts are usually hidden behind warning of “explicit content”.

NSFW content doesn’t just include pornography and suchlike, but also violent pictures and videos that certain users may find disturbing.

Given that Twitter boats hundreds of millions of users, there are many people who like different things, and such platforms inevitably struggle to cater for all the varying interests that their user base has.

This is problematic for Twitter

Twitter’s recent acquisition by Elon Musk has captured the imaginations of many of his supporters around the world, particularly his promises to combat the issue of bots on the site, which have become increasingly burdensome over the past few months.

The issue of bots has thus far dominated the headlines relating to Twitter, and many view it as the largest problem that the platform has to contend with in order to retain market share.

However, bots are not the only problem, and recently-leaked internal documents have shown that Twitter has in fact been losing some of its most active users. These “super tweeters” are less than 10% of accounts but make up over 90% of tweets and more than half of Twitter’s global revenue.

There are many reasons for this, including that other social media such as Instagram is more useful for celebrities and influencers to promote particular products, but it is widely suspected that one of the contributing factors for so many leaving the platform is due to the fact that
