What is WordPress? Have you wondered about this?
WordPress is a Content Management System (CMS), which means that it allows you to manage the content on your website. Your content includes the pages on your site, your blog posts, images, and any other information that you make available on your site.
WordPress originally started as a blogging platform, but in recent years it has evolved into a system that can be used to manage your entire website. In fact, it is now used to run one in six websites in the world – that’s 60 million websites and counting!
There are many reasons for the immense popularity of WordPress:
- It’s incredibly easy to use: You don’t have to be a web designer or HTML guru to make changes to your site. If you decide that you want to change the copy on your Home page or the picture on your About page, you can do so. This gives you a lot of control over making the updates on your own.
- It’s incredibly robust: WordPress uses plugins, which are officially described as “tools that expand the functionality of WordPress.” Basically, this means that if there is a specific function that you would like to have on your website – say, the ability to sell products or to display your latest Facebook updates – there are plugins that can be installed on your site to make that possible.
- It’s easy to create different looks for your site: WordPress uses themes, which are sets of files that control how your site looks. When you’re launching a new site, you can look at different theme options and choose one that you like.
- It’s free: You can have your own custom WordPress site for just the cost of hosting. WordPress does offer an option where they can host the site for you at no cost, but if you’re looking for a small business website, then it’s best to have a custom WordPress site.
- It’s open-source: This means that the code that is used for WordPress is worked on by developers around the world and the software is made freely available to the public.
- It’s SEO (search engine optimization) friendly: Sites that are optimized for search engines get far more traffic than sites that are not optimized. WordPress comes with many SEO features already built-in, and there are many high-quality plugins that can help you expand it even further.
In summary, WordPress is a high-quality, functional, easy-to-use system that you can use to run your website. That is why so many people, myself included, run our websites on WordPress. Honestly, I wouldn’t even consider using anything else!
