In yet another scam, hackers have exploited the vulnerability in an American movie actor Bill Murray’s wallet and walked away with more than $180,000. Murray had raised those funds from the non-fungible token (NFT) charity auction mid this week.
Unfortunately, the recent scam comes a few days after another set of scammers from SudoRare, an automated market maker (AMM), disappeared with more than $820,000 in user funds in a rug pull attack.
Hackers Stole $185M Destined For Charity
According to on-chain data from Etherscan, hackers breached and started to drain Murray’s crypto wallet at around 7:00 P.M ET on September 1. At the time, the perpetrators also tried to steal NFTs from his collection.
But luckily, Project Venkman, a consultancy firm in charge of Murray’s wallets, rapidly stepped in and rescued the targeted NFTs. The consultancy firm successfully moved his high-priced NFTs, including Damien Hirst NFT, two CryptoPunks, a Pudgy Penguin, a Cool Cat, and numerous Flower Girls, to safehouse wallets.
According to Project Venkman, hackers also tried to steal 800 NFTs from the Bill Murray collection, which was sitting in the wallet. Again, Venkman ran a script and rapidly moved those NFTs to a safehouse before the raid.
Unfortunately, a representative of Project Venkman confirmed that notorious hackers successfully disappeared with 119.2 ETH worth around $185,000. Murray had raised those digital assets from an NFT charity auction.
The consultancy firm has tracked the footprints of the perpetrators and revealed that the attackers later sent the stolen funds to a wallet address tied to the crypto exchange Binance and Unionchain.ai. However, the security firm has yet identified the culprits.
Benefactor Replaces The Stolen Funds
But interestingly, although the original ETH is gone, Mishap72, a Coinbase user and a runner-up in the recent non-fungible token (NFT) charity auction, has sent 120 ETH ($187,000) to Chive Charities to replace the stolen funds.
In the meantime, Venkman has reported the matter to the police. They are working closely with crypto analytic firm chainalysis to bring the attackers to justice. The recent raid showcases that even well-known celebrities can fall victim to crypto hackers and thieves-related incidents.
Tamadoge, an NFT-related platform, continues flourishing despite scam threats and other factors undermining the progress of digital assets. Tamadoge has raised more than $10.9 million from its token presale.
