Roblox has become one of the most popular online games globally, seeing continued growth in its user base.
In the first quarter of 2023, the platform’s daily active users (DAUs) saw a remarkable year-over-year increase of 22%, along with a 12% growth quarter-over-quarter, according to a recent report from Sensor Tower.
Furthermore, Sensor Tower data shows that Roblox’s user growth continued to strengthen during the second quarter of 2023, with April’s DAUs marking a YoY increase of 28% and a 5% MoM rise.
The total number of hours spent on the Roblox mobile app also exhibited an impressive growth of 16% YoY and 12% QoQ, according to Sensor Tower.
Roblox itself reported a 23% YoY increase in hours engaged, coupled with a 13% QoQ rise.
As of the first quarter of 2023, Roblox had over 66.1 million daily active users of Roblox games worldwide, which is unchanged from the previously reported quarter, data from Statista shows.
Roblox DAU has grown significantly since the beginning of 2020 when the global COVID-19 pandemic started to spread.
Since then, the company has managed to retain and even increase its newly won audiences, although Roblox user growth has been slowing down since 2022.
Meanwhile, some interesting trends have emerged as the number of active users on Roblox has grown.
For one, the time spent per user on mobile has actually decreased YoY.
In response to this, Roblox has been exploring various strategies to enhance user engagement. For instance, the platform has leveraged partnerships and in-game activations to encourage users to spend more time playing.
These initiatives, similar to Meta’s deployment of Reels on Facebook and Instagram, aim to captivate users and prolong their gaming experiences.
Roblox Inks Partnerships With Major Brands to Solidify its Leading Position
Partnerships with brands have proven to be particularly beneficial for Roblox’s growth.
The platform has collaborated with renowned companies like Gucci and Vans, which has allowed it to present users with immersive experiences that subtly expose them to the brand’s products.
This non-intrusive format has been well-received by users, as they willingly join in the experience instead of being subjected to traditional advertisements.
In its Q1 2023 earnings report, which was released in May, Roblox disclosed that users spent a staggering 14.5 billion hours engaged on the platform, representing a substantial 23% YoY increase.
This figure is up from close to 12.8 billion hours in the previous quarter, according to data from Statista.
Additionally, these users collectively spent $773.8 million on Roblox during this period, a 23% surge compared to the previous year. On average, each daily active user spent $11.70, which remained consistent YoY.
“Since inception we have focused on building a technology platform that enables a large and growing community of creators to build amazing experiences,” David Baszucki, founder and CEO of Roblox, said at the time, adding:
“The momentum in our business demonstrates the success of our creator community as they bring their visions to life on Roblox, attracting an ever-growing global user base that spans all ages.”
Roblox Continues to See Significant Growth
Roblox has experienced a remarkable surge in popularity and financial success over the past couple of years.
With a staggering 56 million individuals logging into Roblox every day, the platform has seen a significant increase from the 45.5 million daily users of the previous year.
In terms of financials, Roblox reported an impressive inflow of $2.2 billion in revenue during the year 2022. This substantial figure speaks to the platform’s immense success and popularity among its users.
Furthermore, in the first quarter of 2023, Roblox generated approximately $202.04 million through in-app purchase revenues worldwide, up from around 200 million U.S. dollars in the preceding quarter.
The Developer Exchange Program on Roblox has also seen remarkable growth.
Registered creators in the program received a whopping payout of $623.9 million in 2022, exceeding the previous year’s total of $538.3 million. This highlights the platform’s commitment to supporting and rewarding its talented creators.
It is worth noting that Roblox has also set several records in terms of user engagement. At its peak, the platform saw 5.7 million concurrent users.
Furthermore, the first quarter of 2023 saw over 4.5 million asset creators and developers cashing in their earned Robux.
When it comes to its user base, Roblox’s largest age group is 9 to 12-year-olds, comprising 23% of its users. This statistic underscores the platform’s reputation as a popular choice among younger gamers.
In terms of device usage, the vast majority of Roblox gamers, 78%, primarily access the platform through mobile devices, while only a small fraction, approximately 1%, engage with Roblox through consoles.
All in all, Roblox’s tremendous growth in users, revenue, and engagement is a testament to its appeal and success as an online game platform and game creation system.
