Jeremy Cahen, one of the founders of the Bored Ape Yacht Club copycat non-fungible token collection RR/BAYC, has filed a lawsuit seeking against Yuga Labs, seeking to block ten of its pending NFT and metaverse trademark applications.
Jeremy Cahen tabled a lawsuit before United States Patents and Trademark Office on February 9, seeking to block the approval of trademark applications filed by famous digital assets incubation firm Yuga Labs.
RR/BAYC Founder Files Lawsuit Against Yuga Labs
Established in 2021, Yuga Labs is home to popular NFT collections, including Mutant Ape Yacht Club, Bored Ape Kennel Club, Meebits, Otherdeed, Sewer Pass, 10KTF, and Bored Ape Yacht NFT Collection.
The digital assets studio filed the subject trademark application in mid-2021, seeking to cover a bunch of BAYC logos, artwork, and branding for potential use across digital products, such as metaverse wearables, trading cards, and NFT-themed arts.
Moreover, Yuga Labs also intended to launch a range of physical BAYC products, including clothing, jewelry, watches, and keychains. The NFT firm also showcased an interest in offering entertainment services like gaming, television, and music.
RR/BAYC And Yuga Labs Legal Battle Takes New Twist
In the recent lawsuit, Cahen told the commission that Yuga Labs abandoned any right to specific logo and artwork designs after gaining massive adoption. He also claims all rights of digital images belong to the NFT owner.
In that context, the RR/BAYC co-founder convinced the trial board that Yuga Labs duly handed over all the intellectual property (IP) rights to the ApeCoin decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) back in march 2022.
While commenting about the lawsuit, Yuga Labs’ spokesperson has blemished Cahen claims, describing the move as just another attempt to cause trouble in the firm. Yuga Labs claims Cahen tries to distract the infringement issue of the Yuga intellectual property.
It’s worth noting that Yuga Labs has an active trademark infringement lawsuit against Jeremy Cahen and his fellow co-founder Ryder Ripps. Yuga Labs filed a lawsuit in June 2022, alleging the two for scamming its consumers into purchasing copycat BAYC NFTs.
