YouTube Brings New Queue System for iOS and Android

YouTube is testing a feature for its iOS and Android apps that allows users to queue up videos to watch in a row, similar to a temporary playlist. The feature, which has been available on the web for years, will now be available to YouTube Premium users who opt-in to the test.

Users who have previously used the feature on the YouTube Music app or through their Chromecast may already be familiar with it. The queue feature will provide a convenient way for users to watch multiple videos back to back without manually searching for and selecting each video.

By turning the feature on and accessing the three vertical dots menu on video thumbnails, users gain access to a new “Play last in queue” button. Tapping that button adds the video to the bottom of the user’s current queue — or creates a new one if the user isn’t watching any video.

Although users get more views from YouTube Shorts, this doesn’t apply to them. As you watch a video on the app with this feature enabled, the next video in the queue will automatically begin playing once the current video has finished.

The user can rearrange the order of the videos or remove them entirely from their queue, and the app will play the next video in the queue once the current video ends until all videos finish.

However, it’s important to note that closing the video player by exiting the app or pressing the “x” button in the bottom bar will delete the entire queue. The app may provide a warning before this occurs.

Testing of the feature will be available until January 28th

YouTube started rolling out this feature in December, and some users have received a notification introducing the new update and a button to turn it on.

YouTube Premium subscribers that didn’t get the pop-up can manually enable it by tapping on their profile picture in the top right corner, opening Settings, navigating to “Try new features,” and tapping the “Try it out” button in the “Queue” section.

YouTube continues to roll out updates to compete with rivals offering similar capabilities

Users might notice that the feature isn’t polished yet as the app fails to add videos to the queue at times, but that doesn’t mean it’ll have problems once launched, as YouTube usually takes months to roll out new updates once testing concludes.

According to the settings screen in the app, the testing will be available until January 28th.

Queueing videos and editing your personalized lists are one of the most sought-after features by those using music streaming apps, and YouTube seems to focus on matching its competition by providing similar quality updates.

The new update comes right after YouTube allowed users to revisit their favorite tracks of the year with YouTube Music’s 2022 Recaps — a direct competitor to Spotify’s Wrapped.
