Hackers show no signs of slowing down in attacking the NFT and Metaverse space. In yet another unsuccessful phishing attempt, hackers have compromised The Sandbox’s social media Discord server and redirected followers to a fake giveaway URL.
In a September 9 blog post, Sebastien Borget, the CEO of The Sandbox, confirmed that hackers compromised its Discord server, redirected followers to fake giveaway links, and even tried to rent its Bored Ape NFTs from Instagram users.

Hackers Fail In The Sandbox Phishing Attack
According to Borget, the compromised The Sandbox profile promoted a fabricated raffle ticket event that touted a season 4 LAND giveaway to unsuspected users. The Sandbox revealed the hackers had already reached out to several users on Instagram.
The voxel-powered NFT platform “The Sandbox” noted that hackers used Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) profile pictures and attempted to “rent” out the NFTs. Hackers breached the two-factor and other security measures to promote the fake giveaway.
At the time, an Instagram user was willing to surrender 40 Ether (ETH) to use the BAYC NFTs for 24 hours. But fortunately, The Sandbox later restored control of its Instagram account, with only one user claiming to have lost NFTs after clicking the fake link.
NFT Scams Increases In 2022
The recent phishing scam attempt appeared a few days after Elliptic research firm shared a detailed report claiming that cybercriminals had stolen more than $100 million worth of non-fungible tokens as of July 2022.
In June 2022, hackers again exploited the vulnerability in Yuga Labs’ Discord social media server and conducted a similar phishing attack on Otherside Metaverse. At the time, hackers disappeared with more than 200 ETH.
In related developments, another group of hackers from SudoRare, an NFT platform forked from two decentralized NFT marketplaces, SudoSwap and LooksRare, recently ran away with more than $820,000 in a rug pull scam.
Despite scam threats and the current general crypto market downtrend, the NFT platform Tamadoge continues flourishing. Tamadoge has already raised more than $13.2 million from its token presale, with less than 30% now left.
