Wylie Aronow, one of the co-founders of Yuga Labs, has shared a statement addressing the accusations there is a Nazi image in the Bored Ape Yacht Club. Aronow is known as Gordon Goner on Crypto Twitter, and he has said that the recent accusations were a “misinformation campaign.”
BAYC founder criticizes Nazi claims
In reply to Twitter users who said the BAYC co-founders were “super-secret Nazis,” Goner stated that the claims were “deeply unfair.” Goner’s comments came after a YouTuber shared a video claiming to have spent six months investigating a connection between the BAYC brand and Nazi symbols.
“We’ve not responded in further detail to these allegations because frankly they are insanely far-fetched. That said, we woke up this morning to a podcaster we respect talking about this conspiracy theory, and that was pretty surreal,” Goner said.
The YouTube video has received over 900K views so far, sparking discussions among its viewers. BAYC is a leading NFT collection in the market, drawing in celebrities eager to engage with digital collectibles. It is also one of the priciest collections on social trading platforms that focus on NFTs.
Yuga Labs co-founder opposes accusations of Nazi symbol
Goner gave a detailed thread explaining how the BAYC NFT collection was not associated with Nazism, as claimed in the YouTube video. Goner said that the BAYC project founders were diversified and included Jews, Turks, Pakistanis, and Cubans.
Goner also said that his wife was Mexican-American, arguing that it did not make sense that the BAYC project would be referred to as a Nazi movement. Goner said that the YouTube video was a “lie.” He also added that these accusations were promoted by an anti-BAYC activist known as Ryder Ripps, who copied the collection and used another name to sell it on Opensea for $3.5 million.
Goner also said that Yuga Labs derived its name from Zelda’s video game. He also talked about the contentious BAYC logo, saying that they did not pay much attention to the logo during its creation.
“We never wanted to take ourselves too seriously, so the look of the club is ramshackle and divey. Everything about the BAYC was meant to convey a spirit of irreverence and absurdity,” Goner added.
