Taylor Swift isn’t done shaking off the haters quite yet. The “Bad Blood” singer is back with a brand new sound three years after she redefined her image in “1989”—and it’s much darker than anyone could have imagined.
Her new single “Look What You Made Me Do” was released late Thursday night, along with a lyric video. According to People magazine, “the dark, moody track addresses her critics and features a sample from ‘I’m Too Sexy’ by Right Said Fred.” Swift teased her sixth album and its single with a series of cryptic snake videos—an obvious reference to her well-known disputes with ex Calvin Harris, Kanye West, and Kim Kardashian West.
Some of the single’s most vicious lyrics include, “The world goes on, another day, another drama, drama
But not for me, not for me, all I think about is karma” and “I don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me
I’ll be the actress, starring in your bad dreams.” The most shocking lyric, however, came at the end of the bridge when Swift sings, “I’m sorry, the old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now. Why? Oh ’cause she’s dead!”
In their review of the song, Variety mentioned that “the song’s tone is meant to make you think that the bad blood she sang about three years ago has dug a little deeper into her core.” Furthermore, Vox stated that the song was not just dark but also “petty as hell.”
The official video for “Look What You Made Me Do” premieres Sunday at the MTV Video Music Awards. Her album “Reputation” is set to be released Nov. 10.
