President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump caught a glimpse of the once-in-a-lifetime total solar eclipse on Monday and, in doing so, inspired a hilarious, shade-filled internet meme. Accompanied by son Barron, Trump gazed up at the rare astronomical event and, at one point, seemingly stared directly into the sun without his special glasses.
People magazine reports that as the Trumps emerged on the Truman Balcony at the White House to watch the celestial phenomenon, they put on their “eclipse glasses,” then briefly removed them just minutes later. Both Trump and the first lady then appear to stare directly into the sun at different times. One of the aides reportedly shouted, “Don’t look!” Trump later gave reporters a thumbs up once his glasses were back on.
Looking at the solar eclipse without special-purpose solar filters can cause permanent eye damage. Those within the path of totality could remove their glasses only when the sun was completely covered by the moon. “Experience totality, then, as soon as the bright sun begins to reappear, replace your solar viewer to look at the remaining partial phases,” NASA advised. Staring at the sun without the proper protection can actually burn a hole through your retina, leading to irreversible damage.
Other top officials that were in attendance at the White House, according to The Hill, include Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, interim communications director Hope Hicks and Trump’s daughter Ivanka. USA Today reports that Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart” played over the White House PA system during the event.
