President Donald Trump’s first White House Easter Egg Roll is off to a meme-worthy start. Standing on the balcony with First Lady Melania Trump, son Barron and even the Easter bunny during opening remarks, social media couldn’t help but notice the hilarious pairing of Trump and a bewildered-looking bunny.
“We’re right on track,” Trump said on the South Lawn. “You see what’s happening, and we’re right on track. So thank you, everybody, for being here.” He later added, “We’re going to come out and join you, and enjoy your company for a roll, a great Easter Egg Roll. And I don’t know if we’re going to be successful, but I know a lot of people down there are going to be successful. I’ve seen those kids, and they’re highly, highly competitive. That I can tell you.”

The president’s remarks were overshadowed, however, by a wide-eyed Easter bunny with a less-than-celebratory expression on its face. Another highlight of the morning was Trump forgetting to place his hand over his heart during the National Anthem. Luckily, the First Lady was there to remind him.
The first Easter Egg Roll took place in 1878 under President Rutherford B. Hayes when he “opened up the South Lawn to children who had been chased off the grounds of the U.S. Capitol,” according to the White House. It is considered one of the oldest annual events in White House history. This year’s Easter Egg Roll, occurring the day after the Trumps’ latest visit to Mar-a-Lago, was expected to draw 21,000 people.
